Restless Leg Syndrome

Transcript: This is restless leg syndrome awareness week. With that in mind, we spoke to a local expert about the common but mysterious sleep disorder. According to Doctor Jennifer Dewolfe, restless leg syndrome affects anywhere from 5 to 10 percent of the population and it varies widely in severity. However, she says the disorder’s reputation as a disease is not deserved. The discomfort can be so severe that people just stand it. I’ve had patients tell me they want to kill themselves because of the symptoms and so it can be very disabling. Restless leg symptoms include an uncomfortable sensation somewhere in the body but typically in the limbs, that creates the urge to move. This movement remedies the sensation. It is also far more common in the evening. Causes can range from neurological problems to low vitamin levels. The only way to find out is the get screened.
